Obituary for Ruben Arroyo

Ruben Arroyo
January 23, 1933 – April 12, 2017

Mr. Ruben Arroyo of Opa Locka, FL, passed peacefully in his sleep in the early morning on Tuesday, April 12, 2017, at the age of 84 at Jackson Memorial Hospital. By his side were his daughter, Linda, granddaughter, Tanya, and great-grandson, Bailey.
Ruben (pronounced with an accent over the è of which he would remind you!) was born on January 23, 1933 in Salinas, Puerto Rico, but grew up in Poncè until he moved to the states. His beloved mother, Flora Arroyo Rico, brought him and her other two sons, Louis and Antonio, to New York in 1947 where they lived on the west side of Manhattan. Life later brought him to the Bronx, where he met and fell for the love of his life, Sylvia Dominguez. Ruben was a strong, hard-working man that would give you the shirt off of his back and the last penny in his pocket. He was a giver, never a taker, and always the consummate peacemaker.
Ruben was the friendliest man who never met a stranger. He was quick to laugh and always held a smile. He loved to turn his salsa music up loud, play the congas hard, and sing his favorite songs with passion. He had a pep in his step everyone knew well and a style about him no one could compare. He loved his coffee strong, his food piping hot, loved a good deal at the second-hand shop, and loved a good piece of cake and a tall glass of milk. The man simply loved life.
More than all of that, Ruben LOVED his family. He was an affectionate, caring, kind, giving, generous, and gracious man, just to name but a few of his countless attributes. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sylvia Arroyo, with whom he loved for more than 61 years of his life. Not only was Ruben a loyal, warm and tender husband, he was an amazingly devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, too. He is survived by his three daughters, Linda, Sylvia, and Flora, his grandchildren Joshua (Stephanie), Tanya (Jason), Michelle, Felicia, Geno, Tristan, and great-grandchildren, Adrianah, Bailey, Shane, Tyler, and Isaac. He is preceded in death by his adored mother, Flora, his older brother, Louis, and younger brother, Tony.
Ruben Arroyo was truly a great man. He was treasured by his loved ones and admired by all else. He was everyone’s favorite. Charming. Honest. Noble. Respected. Despite the ripe age of 84 and a full life, he was taken Home far too soon. His absence leaves a void like no other. He will be truly missed.
A memorial of his life will be held for family and dear friends on Saturday, April 15, 2017 from 3:00pm-8:00pm at Valle’s Funeral Homes & Crematory (Florida Cremation Services) located at: 12830 NW 42nd Ave., Opa Locka, FL 33054. (786) 507-7288.
